I am building my first drag car and need to get a S&W Pre Bent 10pt cage installed in my 81 Z28. Does anybody around here do this kind of work or do I need to take my car to the Wichita area. I have a guy in Newton that will do it but I would rather get somebody local to install the cage.

This has absolutely notthing to do with any of the above posts, but I was questioned by an individual about cages just recently. What if someone were to get a cage "kit" and weld it together on their own? Are the cages and their integrity checked on tech-in? I'm sure there is a certain quality of weld or such that must be met and certified. Hopefully not just anyone with a lincoln welder and spare time can do it.

The way I see it is, if the car runs 11.50 or slower then anyone can install the cage. I would not think it mattered untill the cage becomes a requirement.

Of course, I should have been more clear in my statement.
Assuming the car will actually need it, that is, run faster than 11.49 or the MPH break.
I think the person that's questioned me wanted to fab it himself but was unsure if the welds would be checked, if there are certain specifications that need to be met when installing, ect.

If you install the equipment no matter if it is required or not it must be installed correctly not matter what the ET or MPH. Example are SFI 16.1 certified seat belts, If you are 11.50 or slower that are not required, but if used they must be installed correctly. Rich

Lol, although i'm sure i'll need one someday it's not me. However when the time comes it will be nice to know this information. Basically I know someone that is having a cage installed by a friend. I want to make sure that the person doing the work knows that it needs to meet a certain requirement. The car that this is going in will be in the 10.99-11.49 range. I just don't want the guy to get somebody to weld this cage in and it be incorrectly done and ruin his cage. I think it's kind of a budget deal, as he knows about Nixon being able to do the work. Although a cage definately isn't the place to cut corners!

I really need to buy an NHRA rule book. I was visiting with someone that has one and he believes that there were published specs about this issue in there.
Something like, no welds can be ground on, tube thickness, ect.
I might try doing a little internet searching and see what I can find.
